Map before cutting
The cutter studies colour direction, zoning, fractures, inclusions and crystal shape. A preliminary window or trimmed face may reveal whether the interior matches the surface.
Orientation determines how colour is concentrated and where fractures will meet the finished outline.

Cut for the crystal
Step cuts can suit elongated crystal shapes and protect vulnerable corners, but no outline is automatic. Cabochons may make better use of translucent or heavily included material.
The finished weight divided by rough weight, multiplied by 100, gives polished yield. Yield alone does not measure whether the decision was good.
