Emerald is a variety of beryl

The most valued emerald colours are generally bluish green to pure green with vivid saturation and a tone that is not excessively dark, although quality exists across a broad range. GIA, Emerald Quality Factors

Why isn't every green beryl an emerald?

Colour saturation is important. GIA's consumer guidance explicitly notes that beryl needs sufficiently saturated green colour to be termed emerald, with lighter material described as green beryl. GIA

Scientific literature has also defined emerald through characteristic chromium and/or vanadium absorption. GIA, Pignatelli et al.

The practical point is that chemistry and visible appearance must be interpreted together. Trace chromium in a pale green crystal does not compel the trade to call it emerald.

The 1996 Nigerian study found mixed spectroscopic behaviour involving the classic emerald components chromium/vanadium and the iron-related absorption familiar in aquamarine-type beryl. The Nasarawa Eggon example

The best modern Nigerian example comes from GIA's study of a new 2024 find reported from Nasarawa Eggon. The crystals contained conspicuous green bands, and chemical analysis of those bands detected iron plus trace vanadium and chromium. Yet GIA published the material as green beryl. That is precisely why a seller should not make the equation:

chromium + vanadium + Nigeria = emerald.

The full gemmological appearance and laboratory interpretation matter.

Can two laboratories disagree?

Variety nomenclature and geographic origin can involve interpretation, particularly near boundaries. For valuable stones, a respected laboratory report is preferable to a dealer applying a variety name solely from a photograph or handheld test.

GIA similarly stresses that geographic-origin conclusions are expert opinions built from multiple forms of evidence and may occasionally differ between laboratories. GIA, Geographic Origin Dilemma

How NigerianEmeralds.com should describe borderline rough

Where a crystal has not been independently identified and its colour is pale or ambiguous, avoid an unconditional listing such as:

“Natural Nigerian Emerald Rough.”

More defensible alternatives include:

“Natural Nigerian green beryl / possible emerald rough — identification pending”

or:

“Supplier-described Nigerian emerald rough; independent gemmological identification not yet completed.”

Once laboratory analysis identifies the variety, update the description rather than preserving the supplier label.

Does green beryl have less value?

There is no universal price relationship because value depends on the individual material, but the emerald name has substantial commercial significance. Colour is the dominant quality factor for emerald, and stronger, attractive saturation generally commands higher value than pale material all else being equal. GIA Emerald Buyer's Guide

A particularly attractive Nigerian green beryl can still be a desirable gemstone or mineral specimen. Correct identification adds credibility; it does not make the material uninteresting.

The buyer's rule

Buy the gemstone in front of you, then verify the name attached to it.

For Nigerian material, consider:

  • actual face-up colour;
  • colour saturation;
  • transparency;
  • colour zoning;
  • laboratory varietal identification;
  • treatment status;
  • strength of geographic provenance.

The strongest Nigerian emerald market will be built on accurate descriptions, not on stretching the emerald label to include every pale green Nigerian beryl.
