Nigerian emerald locations at a glance
The most useful way to understand Nigerian emerald geography is to separate documented emerald localities from broader beryl districts. The landmark 1996 study mapped the main central Nigerian emerald and green-beryl occurrences then known and described two different geological environments: older Basement Complex pegmatites and younger alkaline granites. The evidence labels matter commercially. A seller saying “Nasarawa emerald” may be describing supplier provenance rather than a laboratory-confirmed mine origin. A buyer should therefore distinguish the country, the reported locality, the documentary chain of custody and any independent gemmological origin opinion. GIA stresses that geographic origin conclusions are opinions based on a combination of scientific evidence and reference data, not an infallible method of determining the precise hole from which a gemstone emerged. Nasarawa Eggon and Kwafam Gwari
Nasarawa Eggon is one of the most important names in the Nigerian beryl story. The 1996 Journal of Gemmology study records gem-quality aquamarine from Sabon Wana and Tundun Delli and specifically states that emeralds were known from Kwafam Gwari in the Nasarawa Eggon area. Older literature may confusingly describe Nasarawa Eggon as being in Plateau State. This reflects the administrative geography of the time: Nasarawa State was created from the western part of Plateau State in October 1996. Nasarawa State Government – About Nasarawa State
The area remains gemmologically relevant. In 2025 GIA reported examining material from a new 2024 find described to it as the Nasarawa Eggon mine. GIA classified this material as green beryl, not emerald. The crystals displayed concentrated green bands, especially near some terminations; analysis found iron along with trace vanadium and chromium in the greener zones. GIA, New Nigerian Green Beryl Find
That distinction is valuable for buyers: a Nigerian origin alone does not make green beryl an emerald, and even material from a historic emerald-producing district can include beryl belonging to another commercial colour variety.
Gwantu, Kaduna State
The 1996 literature identifies an important emerald/green-beryl occurrence east of Gwantu in southeastern Kaduna State. Gwantu therefore deserves to be treated as a genuine historic Nigerian emerald locality rather than merely as a modern dealer attribution. Schwarz, Kanis & Kinnaird, 1996

What the public literature does not justify is treating “Gwantu” as the name of one single, precisely defined commercial mine. For provenance descriptions, wording such as “reported Gwantu area, Kaduna State, Nigeria” is preferable unless documentation establishes a more precise mine or concession.
Janta and the Afu Complex
Another particularly useful published locality is Janta, east of the Afu Complex and described in the 1996 paper as approximately 35 km south-southwest of Keffi. Researchers reported aquamarine and emerald in soft, decomposed granite, with crystals growing in small miarolitic cavities in the granite roof zone, less than about 20 metres below its upper contact with overlying rocks. This is geologically significant because it represents a different-looking source environment from the classic image of an emerald crystal sitting in a schist or black shale. Central Nigeria contains emerald-related beryl associated directly with evolved granitic systems.
Rukuba, Timber Creek and Sha Kaleri
Within the Younger Granite environment, the 1996 study names Timber Creek near Rukuba and the Barakin William occurrence in the Sha Kaleri Complex. In this setting, gem beryl occurs with quartz, feldspar and topaz in small pegmatitic pockets at contacts between granite and older Basement Complex rocks. Barakin William material was particularly notable for strong colour zoning: individual crystals could grade from colourless into deeper blue or green, or contain darker colour bands across otherwise pale crystals.
Other beryl-bearing areas
The same study describes strongly albitised pegmatites around Wamba and Akwanga containing beryl together with minerals such as tourmaline, cassiterite, garnet and apatite. The Egometi district is also described as beryl-bearing. These areas belong in a comprehensive account of Nigerian beryl geology, but they should not automatically be presented online as proven emerald mines. Schwarz, Kanis & Kinnaird, 1996
A later Nigerian review additionally reports a minor emerald occurrence around Adavi near Okene in Kogi State. Because the supporting body of published gemmological data is thinner than for Nasarawa Eggon, Gwantu or the Younger Granite localities, NigerianEmeralds.com should label Adavi as a literature-reported occurrence, rather than implying a well-characterised commercial mine. Can a laboratory tell exactly which Nigerian mine an emerald came from?
Not necessarily. Modern origin determination can use microscopic inclusions, spectroscopy and trace-element chemistry, including LA-ICP-MS, and compare the resulting data against stones of reliable known provenance. But GIA emphasises that deposits can overlap chemically and gemmologically; an inconclusive result is sometimes the scientifically correct answer. GIA, Analytical Methods for Geographic Origin
For buyers, therefore, the best provenance combines supplier records, photographs or documentation from the source, parcel history, cutting records and independent laboratory testing where commercially justified.

Use an interactive map headed “Published Nigerian Emerald & Green Beryl Localities”, but deliberately do not display exact mine coordinates. Use broad town/district markers or labelled regional areas for:

Every marker should open an evidence card containing Material, Published source, Evidence level, Geological setting and Caution. Add a permanent legend: “Markers indicate published locality areas, not mining claims, concession boundaries or exact extraction coordinates.” This accurately reflects the regional nature of the original published map.
