The reported find

GIA reported that material from a new source at the Nasarawa Eggon mine appeared in the market in 2024. Examined crystals showed concentrated green bands near their terminations.

Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence detected iron and trace vanadium and chromium in green zones. Near-colourless areas primarily contained trace iron.

Why the zoning matters

Zoning influences how a crystal is described, photographed and cut. A saturated termination may represent only part of the total rough weight.

For buyers, whole-crystal photographs in transmitted and reflected light are especially useful. For researchers, retaining before-and-after records can show how the zone behaves during cutting.
