Start by spreading the parcel out

GIA documented veteran emerald dealer Arthur Groom demonstrating rough evaluation with a 260 g parcel. One of his first rules was to inspect the parcel as a whole and then spread the stones apart, because colour appears more impressive when many green crystals are clustered together. For a Nigerian parcel, do the same:

  • photograph the parcel together;
  • separate every crystal;
  • sort by apparent quality;
  • weigh each grade separately;
  • then price the parcel according to its actual quality distribution.

Do not let five excellent crystals visually “colour” your judgement of ninety-five grams of lower-grade material.

Inspect colour inside the crystal

Look beyond the outer surface.

Ask:

Is the core coloured?
Is the strongest colour confined to one end?
Is the stone colour-zoned?
Will the green survive preforming?

This is particularly important for Nigerian material because strong growth and colour zoning is documented in both historic and recent samples.

GIA's rough-buying demonstration similarly warns that lighter internal cores can cause a stone to lose apparent colour during faceting.

Transparency before clarity

A rough crystal can contain many inclusions but still have a transparent window capable of yielding a lively gem.

Use transmitted light to identify:

  • transparent zones;
  • cloudy or opaque areas;
  • fractures;
  • inclusions;
  • colour concentrations;
  • potential clean sections.

Do not assume that attractive crystal faces mean attractive internal material.

Map every major fracture

Fractures are among the most important economic features in emerald rough. A seemingly large crystal may need to be divided into several smaller preforms if fractures cross the areas where a single large gemstone might otherwise sit.

Inspect fractures from several angles and distinguish, where possible:

surface-reaching fissures
internal fractures
healed fissures
open cracks
crystal-growth boundaries

A loupe and directional fibre-optic or strong transmitted light are much more useful than a single front-facing phone video.

Shape controls yield

Rough buyers need to visualise the finished stone before purchase. A blocky piece may accommodate a relatively efficient emerald cut or cushion, while a thin pencil crystal, flat shard or heavily fractured irregular crystal might require small stones, cabochons or no faceting at all.

Do not use one universal yield percentage

Emerald yield can vary dramatically.

In GIA's rough-buying demonstration, Groom gave an example in which an unusually well-preserved crystal might retain much more weight than a broken crystal; those percentages were observations from particular Afghan material, not universal emerald constants.

Another documented GIA case involved a 60 ct highly fractured, colour-zoned Afghan rough producing a 12.52 ct finished cushion, a polished yield of approximately 20.9%. GIA, Afghan Emerald

The lesson is not “emerald yields 21%”. The lesson is yield is crystal-specific.

Grade parcels before valuing them

A practical first-pass system is:

Record the weight of each category. That gives far more useful information than the gross price per gram.

Verify what the material actually is

This step matters particularly with pale Nigerian beryl.

Before scaling a new source, sacrifice a representative sample to proper gemmological testing. Establish that the material is natural beryl and obtain professional variety identification where commercial value depends on the emerald name.

Verify the parcel and provenance

Before paying a new remote supplier, request documentation of the exact parcel, not merely examples of previous stock.

A useful record includes:

  • one continuous video showing the exact parcel;
  • weight on calibrated scales;
  • individual views of the best crystals;
  • natural or standardised lighting;
  • supplier name and date;
  • country and reported locality;
  • invoice identifying the material;
  • any mining/export documentation available.

Treat “mine direct” as a claim requiring evidence, not an aesthetic description.

The central principle is simple: never price emerald rough by weight alone. Price the probable polished output and the risk required to reach it. Professional auction buyers similarly model alternative finished shapes, weights and treatment implications before deciding what the rough is worth.
